Transcultural Design

‘Design’ is evolving at a very fast rate in today’s world. In this programme, young designers can learn how to use design for positive social impact on humans and businesses and to better understand the global perspective on design.

Design means a ‘change’ – it could be relative or absolute change. India’s growing economy and high demand for design professionals offer vast opportunities to accommodate young designers during and after their studies. In the current context of globalization, understanding other cultures and other value systems is a major asset for every designer. The M.Des. Transcultural Design encourages the exploration of different cultures within an applied, interdisciplinary context.

Keeping this requirement in mind, MIT ID is offering a trans-disciplinary unique master programme. The Transcultural Design program is a two-year Masters course focusing on social innovation, experiential learning, and design for public interest.

With a strong emphasis on building better understanding of the academia-industry relations, the school invites lecturers who are working professionals as well to teach. Actors of the India design scene from areas such as product design, communication design, interaction design, interior design, graphic design, anthropology, and crafts sector work in close tandem with the M.Des. Transcultural Design programme Head of study. There is a strong emphasis on student mentoring and peer learning in the class. The courses are structured to provide experiential learnings conducted through workshops and other outdoor classes and activities.

Close collaboration with cross-cultural teams and work from a totally different perspective provides a rich experience for young designers willing to work at an international level. The courses are structured to provide experiential learnings conducted through workshops and other outdoor classes and activities.

This programme provides a unique opportunity for young designers to specialize in Social Innovation and Design Thinking. Students will get to learn how to use design for positive social impact on humans and businesses and to better understand the global perspective on design. Students will have to comprehend the Indian market and appropriate the local behaviours to offer a coherent project, adapted to users, with an anthropological approach to design.
